Captain Klaas is a USCG Merchant Mariner qualified to serve as Master on sailboats and motor vessels up to 100 GT in inland and near coastal (up to 200 NM) waters. He is also certified by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Division to teach their Boater Education Course.

His most recent experience has been in the Gulf, but he has also sailed extensively around the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Scotland, Italy, Croatia, and Australia.
